Back in December, we wrote about Amazon’s plans<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that would\u00a0let\u00a0customers walk in, grab what they want from the shelves and walk out without ever having to stand in a checkout line. Well now Walmart is\u00a0going to do the same thing but take it a step further.<\/span><\/p>\n

Walmart announced that it is rolling out a new technology in its stores that enables shoppers to scan and pay for their items without checkout lanes, registers, or cashiers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How it works:<\/strong>\u00a0Shoppers download Walmart’s “Scan & Go” app, then scan the barcodes of the items they wish to purchase. Once they’re finished, they click a button to\u00a0pay and show their digital receipt to a store greeter on their way out the door. Simple.<\/span><\/p>\n

This once again comes back to the ongoing Amazon-Walmart war which has been going on for months.<\/span><\/p>\n

Amazon\u00a0announced back in December plans to introduce a similar technology to its own brick-and-mortar grocery concept, called Amazon Go<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a>, which is still in the works.<\/span><\/p>\n

But Walmart is leapfrogging ahead of Amazon and already rolling it out tin over a dozen stores in US states, including Kentucky, Florida, and Georgia.<\/span><\/p>\n

For customers without smartphones, the stores are providing handheld scanning devices, and customers unwilling to pay via Walmart\u2019s app can still check out at a regular register.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sams Club, which is owned by Walmart, has been using this technology in their stores as shown in this video<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Walmart will have employees conduct random checks to keep people honest. Alcohol or Pricey Items\u00a0will have their own thorough check.\u00a0<\/span>This scan & go is a really cool idea and\u00a0look forward to other retailers doing this same thing<\/span><\/p>\n
