New York Is Offering Rent Relief Due to COVID-19. See If You’re Eligible and How to Apply

New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced an emergency rental assistance program that will assist families with their rent due to COVID-19.

The application period for New York’s Rent Relief Program opened today, and it offers rent-burdened households a one-time subsidy paid directly to their landlords.

The rent relief will be applied to your rent from April 1st thru July 31st and you can qualify whether you rent an apartment or a single family home.

Eligibility:

You will qualify if you:

  1. Earn below 80% of that area’s median income from prior to the outbreak. For example, in Brooklyn the median income for a 2 person household is $72,800. You can see a full breakdown of median income at this link.
  2. All eligible applicants must have already been paying at least 30% of their monthly income toward their monthly rent.
  3. Applicant must have lost some of their income due to COVID-19
  4. U.S Citizen whose primary residence is in New York
  5. Not be receiving Section 8 rent voucher.

If you meet the above requirements, this rent relief program will pay the difference between the 30% of the applicant’s income and the rent that’s due.

If you meet the criteria above but continued to pay your rent during the pandemic, you’ll be able to receive the rent relief for future months.
