You Are Now Able to Renew Your Passport Online!

Americans can now renew their passports online. This new service allows adults renewing a regular 10-year passport, expired within the last five years or expiring soon, to apply entirely online—no in-person visits or mail required. Available 24/7 at travel.state.gov, the service is currently for U.S. residents only.

To renew your passport online, you must meet several requirements:

  • Your passport must have been valid for 10 years
  • You must be 25 or older
  • You cannot change your name, gender, date of birth, or place of birth.
  • You must reside in the U.S. You do not qualify to renew online if you live in a foreign country
  • You cannot travel for at least eight weeks after submitting your application, as the online renewal process only provides routine service.
  • You have your passport with you, and it is not damaged or mutilated, and you have not reported it as lost or stolen.

To start your application, create an account on MyTravelGov and sign in. Click “Renew Your Passport” to begin; you can save your progress but must complete it within 30 days.

Follow the prompts to enter details about your last passport, travel plans, and upload a digital photo. After submitting, keep your most recent passport.

About a week later, you can request email updates on your application status, including notifications for processing, approval, and passport dispatch. The department will also contact you if any additional information is necessary.

Overall processing times are expected to be six to eight weeks.

This online option provides greater convenience while maintaining the same service standards as mail applications. The agency plans to expand the service in the near future.
