REAL ID Rule Now in Effect—What Travelers Need to Know

On May 7th, 2025, the TSA began full enforcement of the REAL ID Act for domestic air travel. This means that all travelers 18 and older must now present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification, such as a U.S. passport, to board domestic flights.

A REAL ID-compliant license usually features a star in the upper right corner. Enhanced Driver’s Licenses are also valid for domestic flights.  Travelers without a REAL ID will not be denied boarding but will undergo additional screening, which may result in delays.

To minimize disruptions, travelers should arrive at the airport at least 2.5 hours prior to departure.

Acceptable alternatives to a REAL ID include:

  • U.S. passport or passport card
  • U.S. Military ID
  • DHS Trusted Traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, FAST or SENTRI)
  • State-issued Enhanced Driver’s License
  • Permanent resident card

Minors under 18 traveling with an adult are not required to present identification at TSA checkpoints.
