A WhatsApp scam is making the rounds again — and it’s catching people off guard. Hackers are taking over WhatsApp accounts by tricking users into giving up their 6-digit verification code. Here’s how it works:
How the Scam Works:
-
A friend’s WhatsApp gets hacked.
You get a message from their number — it looks real because it is their number.
-
They ask for a 6-digit code.
They’ll say something like: “I accidentally sent my code to your number. Can you send it back to me?”
-
You send the code.
But that code is actually for your WhatsApp. Once you send it, they log into your account and repeat the process with your contacts.
How to Protect Yourself:
-
Never share your 6-digit WhatsApp code with anyone — even if they seem like a friend or family member.
-
Turn on two-step verification in WhatsApp:
Go to Settings > Account > Two-step verification and set a PIN. This adds another layer of protection.
-
If your WhatsApp gets hacked, immediately alert your contacts and try to recover your account through WhatsApp’s support.
This scam spreads quickly because it relies on trust — don’t fall for it. Stay alert, and protect your code like a password.
