Amazon Will Start Delivering Packages to Your Parked Car to Prevent Thieves from Stealing it from Your Front Door

From using drones to deliver packages, to a unique key home kit that would give Amazon permission to unlock your front door to drop off packages, comes a new way for Amazon to deliver packages: Your Car. In an attempt to prevent thieves from stealing packages from people’s porch or front door, Amazon on Tuesday rolled out a new program which would deliver packages directly into a customer’s car.

From Amazon:

As a Prime member, get your Amazon packages securely delivered right into your vehicle parked at home, at work or near other locations in your address book. Park your vehicle in a publicly accessible area to receive in-car deliveries, and track your packages with real-time notifications. FREE for Prime members in select cities and surrounding areas with supported vehicles. Check your eligibility, or download the Amazon Key App to get started.

Amazon Key In-Car Delivery supports most 2015 model year or newer Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac, and Volvo vehicles with an active connected car service plan such as OnStar or Volvo On Call. More cars are expected to partner up with Amazon in the near future. For now, this in-car delivery service will be available in 37 cities including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles & Newark [See full list here].

Once you sign up or download the Amazon Key App, the courier will be able to unlock your car or trunk through their smartphone and place the package in your car. The courier will only know the exact location of your vehicle once it reaches the general vicinity of it. Also, they’ll only be able to unlock a vehicle once to prevent unauthorized access. This new delivery system is targeted for people who are worried their packages would get stolen from their front door or those who are unable to receive packages when they’re at work or away. If a customer suffers a broken window, lock or damage as a result of a delivery, Amazon will make sure to make it right for a customer.

This new delivery system is exclusively for Prime Members.
